Setting up a new scene

1. Supported formats

Point clouds:

  • LAS, LAZ, E57 or PTS – format
    • File formats according to ASPRS and other standardized or “de facto” specifications.
    • Point cloud data is preferred/required to be in a known map projection or a known survey grid.
  • There is a hidden beta version of for on-the-fly reprojection of point clouds. For more information contact us at support[a]

Additional data:

Processing requires uploading at least one point cloud file together with any other additional data types.

  • Panoramic images as JPG (images) + CSV / KML (orientation and georeferencing data — required)
    • Image ratio 2:1 (Equirectangular projection)
  • Orientation information as a CSV file.
    • CSV structure sample (include header row)
      • filename,x,y,z,roll,pitch,heading
      • 101.jpg,111111.111,222222.222,33.33,-0.123456,-0.1234567,2.123456
      • 102.jpg,111111.111,222222.222,33.33,-0.123456,-0.1234567,2.123456

    • Shared Cells and text rotations NOT yet supported

2. Uploading data

The new scene is set up in two simple steps. Firstly, the data need to be uploaded. After that, the user selects settings for newly created scene.

  • Start uploading data to a new scene by giving it a title (it can be edited later)
  • Select preferred hosting server or choose default
  • Browse for files to upload (add at least one LAS/LAZ/E57/PTS file before more additional data)
  • Click Create button or mark Create Automatically.
  • When upload is finished and Create is activated, you will be automatically moved to scene page.
  • Processing and displaying of the scene will take some time. After the process successfully ends, you will get notification on the email.

If one or more of your file uploads freezes, just refresh the page (F5) and upload that file again. You might be prompted to give the scene name again before you can continue to next page.

When you are moved to the scene page, just wait for a while for your scene to be processed.

3. User information

The user information can be viewed and modified by clicking a username in the right top corner of the page.


PROFILE and SCENES section opens information about the user. Below there is a list of all scenes created by the user and those he’s been invited to. Under User Dashboard button the user can find statistics for all scenes in one place.

The details on User dashboard page include information about size, number of points, number of views, visibility setting and date of creation. The extent of each individual scene is displayed on a map on the right side, provided that point cloud has coordinate system information. By clicking on the globe symbol zooms to the extent of the selected scene. The scene can be accessed by clicking View, scene name or its extent on the map. From here the user can also delete the scene. Selecting the scene/scenes in All on column activates Actions button. It is used to grant other users access to particular scene/scenes.


On ACCOUNT and PLANS page (also accessible from profile page by clicking Edit button) there are user information and current subscription plan.

4. Scene settings

On the scene page, the owner of the scene can modify settings of the new scene. This includes adding title, description and tags, choosing access mode, selecting download options and assigning coordinate system information. Settings section is located below the 3D window.

Adding a title, description and tags to the scene is a good practice to distinguish the data, provide basic information about the project and to simplify exploring of different scenes. The section to add these details is located below the 3D window.

Share & download

There are a couple ways to share the data with others:

  • By distributing the sharing link to the scenes (Share Link),
  • By embedding the scene on the website (Embed Code),
  • By allowing download of original individual scanning blocks (under Go to Downloads button),
  • By inviting other users as admins of the scene,

Clicking Go to Downloads opens a new page from where LAZ files can be downloaded. Original data will be divided into blocks containing less than 50 million points before download. If point cloud data is in known map projection, the range of the data blocks will appear on the map to the left.

In Settings section the user can:

  • choose access mode (Public, Anyone with the link, Invitation Only)
    Access modes symbols: Public, Anyone with the link, Invitation only

    If the scene access is set to Public, the scene will be automatically added to the Pointscene gallery. Anyone with the link access mode indicates that anyone having sharing link can view the dataset in Pointscene and forward/share the link. Share link can be sent directly from scene page by entering email addresses.

    In Invitation Only mode the scene can be opened only by a signed in user who is invited to the scene. To invite someone to the scene, just add their email addresses. It is possible to add multiple emails at once by separating them with the comma. This mode is recommended for confidential data.

  • choose start view
    Thumbnail of the scene is created automatically from the current display in the 3D window by clicking Set Default View. The scene opens up with the same view and in the same location as when generated and with same visualization settings.

  • enable downloading of measurements and selected sections of the scene by marking the box
  • set correct coordinate system information of the data by writing EPSG code in the boxepsg70
  • invite other users as admins by adding their email addressesinviteAdmin2
  • delete the whole scene

Advanced settings

Clicking on Advanced Settings button moves the user to a new page. Here the user can choose whether to:

  • Allow mass downloads,
  • Allow annotations,
  • Save annotations to Geo-database.

Working with a scene

Pointscene provides the user with the possibility to navigate the point cloud, change the visualization, make measurements, create profiles and sections, share and download the data (if allowed by scene owner).

1. General information

3D window

3D window and point cloud tools

All previously mentioned activities take place in the 3D window. It is used for displaying point cloud. Here the user can find all tools dedicated to navigation, visualization, measurements, annotations and sections.

The user can switch to fullscreen mode by clicking the Toggle Full Screen icon at the bottom right corner of the 3D window. To exit fullscreen mode press Esc button.

By clicking on the icon beside it (Toggle map), the extent of the point cloud (if it is in known map projection) is shown on top of the OpenStreet base map. The red dot shows the current location of the viewpoint.

Basic information about the scene is displayed below the 3D window.
The first icon shows how many users marked this scene as a favourite. By marking a scene as favourite, the user can easily access it from the profile. Next icons show the number of views, the number of points in the scene, access status (Public, Invitation only, Anyone with the link).

By clicking the green image icon below the scene window, you can download a high-resolution screenshot of the current view as PNG (including also measurements or comments, if visible in the view)

Comment section

All signed in users can comment on the scene they have access to. The comment section is located under the 3D window. This is a space to write comments, add links to websites, documents, other scenes etc.

Sharing and downloading the data

Depending on the access status granted by the data owner and scene settings, the user will be able to download or share forward the data. For this purposes go to SHARE & DOWNLOAD section below the 3D window.


The user can choose among three methods:

  • Copy Share Link
  • Copy Embed Code
  • Click Go to Downloads

Clicking Go to Downloads opens a new page from where LAZ block files can be downloaded (each contains less than 50 millions points). If point cloud data is in known map projection, the range of the data blocks will appear on the map to the left.

2. Navigation

To navigate the point cloud the user can use both mouse and keyboard.

  • Mouse:
    • Zoom and center the view to a location with double click- by holding left mouse button rotate around chosen location point
    • Rotate the view- click + hold left mouse button
    • Pan the view- click + hold right mouse button
    • Zoom in and out– move mouse wheel forward and backward
  • Keyboard:
    • Move left– A key
    • Move right– D key
    • Move up– R key
    • Move down– F key
    • Move forward– W key
    • Move backward– S key
    • Increase movement speed with SHIFT button

Panoramic images

If the scene contains panoramic images (terrestrial or mobile), the capture locations are shown as white bubbles.

  • Enter image view- left click
  • Exit image view- right click
  • Move to the next image (if available)- left click on the button

3. Measurements

To measure points, distances and areas use the toolbar at the top left-hand corner of the 3D window.

  • Activate the measurement by clicking appropriate tool with the left mouse button.
  • Start measurement with left click on the point cloud and end it with right click.
  • Clear all measurements by refreshing the page.

Measure point coordinates

  • When this tool is active, XYZ- coordinate values of the cursor are shown. They change dynamically when the position of the cursor changes.
  • Left mouse click stores the values in the view.
  • Measured point is moved to a different location by dragging it with left mouse button and dropping in the new location.
  • To select a measured point, click on it with left mouse button. Measurement Editor opens.
  • Points can be deleted or saved as annotations in Measurement Editor.

Measure distances

  • Measures distances between individual points in XYZ space.
  • Results are shown as a 3D distance and as a location difference (XY) and height difference (Z).
  • Node of the line is moved to a different location by dragging it with left mouse button.
  • Select the line by left mouse click to open Measurement Editor and delete the line or save as annotation.

Measure areas

  • Start the tool by left mouse click on the measurement toolbar.
  • Add points with left mouse click.
  • Move points to a different location by dragging them with left mouse button.
  • Measurement Editor is used to check area and perimeter of the polygon or to delete it/ save as annotation.

Export Measurements

Exports the measurements to DXF vector format or as TXT.

4. Annotations

The tool is available for signed in users when in Advanced Settings the user allowed annotations. Annotations toolbar is visible at the bottom left-hand corner of the 3D window. Annotations are created in the same way as measurements are made.

While creating new annotation the user adds object name, object description and layer of the annotation. To view annotation statistics, center Annotation editor and click the orange arrow next to the close button.

5. Sections and profiles

This tool allows to select and download points from the area specified by the user.

  • Choose Place Section tool from the toolbar at the top of the 3D window
  • Left mouse click anywhere on the point cloud to choose first point of the section
  • Add next points. Right click to end
  • Move and modify the extent of box by moving the walls of the box
  • The wall which is currently modified, changes colour to orange
  • Move the ends of the box by dragging the handles on top of it

Toggle clip mode

Use this tool to hide/show the points remaining outside the section.

  • Modes: Disabled (all points visible), Highlight (points inside the box highlighted), Clip outside (only points in box visible)
  • Change between the modes by clicking on the Toggle clip mode icon on the toolbar

Download selection points

If the downloads have been enabled to the particular scene by the scene owner, you can save selected points to chosen format (LAS/CSV/XYZ).

6. Visualisation options

Visualization options for point clouds, photos and vector models are accessed by clicking the icon Options in the top right-hand corner of the 3D window.

Point clouds can be visualized using:

  • RGB- natural colours (if available)
  • Z- height values
  • INT- intensity values (if available)
  • CLS- point classification (if available)
  • MIX- combination of two previously mentioned methods

Height and Intensity values can be scaled either using default range or specified by the user. This option is available when height values or intensity visualization method is chosen.

Additional enhancing options include:

  • Edge effect– if set to active, edges of points are enhanced
  • Adaptive points– if set to active, gaps in point cloud are closed

The user can also:

  • choose point size
  • turn on/off the visibility of the point cloud (for classified point clouds it is possible to change the visibility of each class separately)

In general section of Photos settings, the user can change the size and turn on/off the visibility of bubbles representing capture location of photos. Photo mode settings are related to image view.

  • Opacity level controls transparency of panoramic images
  • Background mode set to active shows the point cloud on top of panoramic image, when this setting is turned off image is displayed before point cloud
  • Active Peek mode creates circular window around the cursor to reveal points underneath panoramic image

In this section, the user can turn on/off the visibility of vector objects.


This section controls general visualization options of the point cloud.

  • Setting Performance to Low/Medium/High changes the number of points to be displayed.
  • Object interaction enables and disables selectability and modification of the objects (vector data, annotations).
  • Enabled Tools auto-follow feature changes the location of the point of view dynamically with vectorization.
